Zara and Jannat asked Maria if she went to school. Maria looked a little confused. “Oh,” she said, “yes, school, only my brother Kasim goes to school. Whilst I help mum with the cooking and cleaning.”

Zara looked a little shocked as Maria was around her own age of 7 to 10. “Should you not be going to school too? It is a lot of fun. It is where we are taught about many different things.”

Maria looked a little sad. “Father says only my brother Kasim should go to school. As he will be the one to work and bring food to our plates. I wish I could go school too. I love learning. I have learnt to speak English from my brother. He lends me his school books. I learn as much as I can.”

Zara and Jannat settled down to eat once Maria’s mum had finished cooking.

Maria’s father and brother returned home. The father looked strict and did not speak very much. Zara and Jannat were a little frightened by the father.

Kasim talked about what he had learnt at school that day.
