The Road Most Traveled
Where do you even start when deciding where to travel? Most people who want to travel have some sort of idea, potentially too many ideas. They have seen places on Instagram, locations in movies that seemed almost too good to be true, or just iconic locations that people talk about all the time. Maybe it is somewhere you already know someone, perhaps a friend or family member. Likewise, it could be something you have learned in school: the ancient histories of Rome, Greece, or Egypt or the undiscovered places of Asia (they have all been discovered, most likely by the people who live there or, if you are only counting tourists, then by approximately all so-called Instagram traveling influencers. Itâs just they donât have a Starbucks within walking distance, so they arenât packed with tourists yet).
If you are stuck on where to go, the best place to start is with yourself. Not Google or Instagram but by deciding what you are trying to achieve by traveling and then finding a place that allows you to meet your goals, whatever they may be. However, you may be in a situation where you still have no clue where to start. If you are reading this after living in a so-called western country, then you can roughly split the world into two parts. No, not East and West. Nor the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, although this may affect the time of year that you travel. Instead, it is best to split your travels into either finding âcomfort in familiarityâ or âexperience an adventure.â
Letâs start with comfort in familiarity. Traveling to these types of places is for those who are more apprehensive about traveling. Maybe this is your first time going a long distance without family, or it could be for those that are looking for a more guaranteed type of traveling experience, one you know you will have a good time on, a certain 7/10 journey. The countries most likely to fall into this category are in North America, Europe and Australasia. This is not to say you canât find a decent trip on any other continent, but these places are set up to have a more consistent experience, so it is more likely that you will find it in them.
Conversely, experiencing an adventure has the potential to have much higher highs but also much lower lows than could be initially dreamed about. These types of journeys typically have greater cultural differences than those of comfort-in-familiarity locations, which either can be something you donât enjoy, in which case at least youâve learned something about yourself, or alternatively, it could be something you had no concept of before and now have found a passion in. The countries most likely to fall into this category are in Asia, South America, and Africa. These countries are not different from your own in many regards; however, they offer something new and unique that you may not be able to find anywhere else.
