CHRONIC INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS

An estimated 750,000 to 1,000,000 women in the United States suffer from a condition called chronic interstitial cystitis. It often manifests as severe pain in the bladder 24 hours a day, along with uncomfortable burning during urination. Like so many other conditions discussed in this book, it has no known cause and, as a consequence, no known cure. It is most commonly treated with the drug Elmiron, which offers little or no help to the majority of women who use it.

I consider chronic interstitial cystitis another manifestation of adrenaline dominance. As we saw in the section on urinary urgency (in the previous chapter), excess adrenaline can cause not only the urge to urinate but also the need to urinate frequently. However, some women, for one reason or another—perhaps they work as teachers or cashiers—do not have the luxury of being able to run to the bathroom every 20 minutes or so. As a result, they tense up the muscles of the bladder in an attempt to prevent leakage. Any prolonged tensing of muscles can cause lactic acid to build up. This, in turn, can cause both pain in the walls of the bladder and burning upon urination.

Because of the role of lactic acid buildup in chronic interstitial cystitis, I refer to it as fibromyalgia of the bladder. Not surprisingly, it is often associated with fibromyalgia elsewhere in the body.
