SPECIAL INTERESTS AND OBSESSIONS
The special interests that students on the spectrum tend to have can be useful in teaching academic subjects. If a student is into trains, maths skills can be taught by working out the number of hours or minutes it takes to get somewhere, and history or geography can be taught by using the kinds of trains from different historical eras as a starting point, or which cities and rural terrains the different train lines go through, for example.
When the student reaches the teen years, it’s time to start thinking about how to channel special interests or talents into a career or job skill. There are many jobs and possibilities that require specific skills; parents need to do much research into different lines of work. This will be discussed more fully in the following chapter.
