The JPEG format has a Quality slider, which controls the amount of compression applied to the photo. The resulting file sizes vary depending on the content of the photo, and therefore how much they can be compressed. Photos with large flat areas of color compress much more than detailed or noisy photos.

As a rule of thumb, Lightroom’s default setting of 75 is a good all-round choice. 60 creates smaller for photos for the web/email, without significant loss of quality. For ‘master’ images that aren’t important enough to require lossless compression, try using 90 instead of 100. There’s a substantial reduction in file size without visible degradation.
