LOWDOWN:

Executive recruiters (also known as headhunters) are paid by companies to fill management, professional, and technical slots within their firms. Most of a recruiter's work is done via phone and e-mail, so you can perform this job from anywhere; from time to time, however, you may still need to make face-to-face contacts. Finding job candidates is the easy part of this business. They will typically come to you, via your Web site or as the result of the carefully targeted ads you place; you may also do some searching for them yourself at online career Web sites or by scanning business publications where the names of up-and-comers are mentioned. Client companies will be a little tougher to come by. You will have to be aggressive in your marketing efforts—make cold calls, attend trade shows, place ads. Some executive recruiters specialize in recruiting for a particular industry, such as technology or telecommunications; others focus on a job category across all industries—they recruit for marketing or human resources positions, for example. A sales personality is helpful in this business, as is the ability to be self-motivated and persistent. You will need self-confidence, tenacity, and good networking skills to make it as a recruiter. This career choice gives you a great deal of flexibility and personal freedom; as long as you have access to a phone, you can work from any location.

STARTUP:

A computer and printer are essential, as is database, word processing, and communications software. These items will cost from $2,500 to $5,000. You will need telephones (land line and cell phone), a headset, copier, scanner, and fax, along with office furniture and business cards, brochures, and a Web site to promote your business, for an additional cost of $1,500–$5,000. You'll earn an average 25–30 percent of the new hire's salary—so it behooves you to search for high-end, top-level management positions.

BOTTOM LINE ADVICE:

Competition for the best companies and top-notch candidates is stiff, and you get paid only when you successfully match a company with a candidate. But the financial rewards in this business can be considerable, and the satisfaction of helping a good candidate find a job and filling a key position for your client makes your efforts worthwhile.
