After all her effort, Ada had really wanted a much bigger reaction, but at least he didn’t say she’d messed it up again. She was just glad she didn’t have to try anymore. They had a new assignment using cut paper. She spent the rest of class halfheartedly working on it while she listened to her dad ooooh and aaaahhhh over her classmates’ work. He lingered especially long over Nina’s pieces.
“Very nice, Nina. The colors are so well-balanced, and I like what you’ve done with these transitions. Really brilliant!”
“Thanks, Mr. Lace! This one came to me in my dreams.”
“Really?”
“Yes! See, I love to work in the morning, so every night I set up all my materials on the floor. Then I sit in the middle of them and meditate. In the morning I have art! The colors must ride in on my brain waves or something.”
Ada snickered to herself.
“Huh,” said Mr. Lace. “Well, it seems to do the trick. Keep up the good work!”
Let Nina have art. Ada built a robot who made art.
As Mr. Lace edged toward Ada’s seat, she carefully hid her paper.
“Can I see what you have so far?” asked Mr. Lace.
“Oh, I have some work to do on it,” said Ada.
“Just a peek?”
“I want it to be finished first.”
“I can’t let you hand in another late assignment, Ada.”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Lace! I’ve got this one covered. You’ll have it by next art period, I promise.”
Now that Ada had George, all her art problems were solved. Her real masterpiece was finished. She would let George do the rest.
