“Welcome back, Jennifer,” said a voice behind me.

I shook my head, confused and dizzy. I felt as though I’d been poured back into my body, into my brain. I felt present and aware for the first time in what felt like a long time. The last thing I clearly remembered was being in Ms. Black’s office, feeling content, feeling… sleepy? I sighed, feeling a sudden wave of panic rise from the depths of my being and then pop away to nothingness, leaving me feeling only numb and warm. I looked around, calmly surveying my new surroundings, feeling only inquisitiveness and wonder.

I was in an apartment. It was lavishly decorated and spacious, lit dimly with warm lamps recessed into the walls and ceiling. The furniture was modern and minimalist, bold blocks of neutral colors, bedecked with ornaments and trinkets that depicted erotic scenes. “Where am I?” I said suddenly, directing the question to Ms. Black.

“You’re in my apartment, honey,” said Ms. Black calmly, she crossed her legs and folded her fingers over her knee. Her gaze was laser focused on me, studying me.

“You brought me here?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Don’t you remember?” she asked, raising her eyebrow.

I glanced down at the floor and concentrated hard.
