Chapter Fourteen

Granny was gone for the most part the next two days. I relished the alone time, satisfied to stare at the veil’s weak spot—my one chance to get out of here.

There was evidence all around that despite the silence, Granny had been around. Every meal time, a plate of delicious, if sweet, food was placed on the table. While it was tasty and always appeared at the right time, the absence of my grandmother made me feel like I was even more of a prisoner in solitary confinement, you know, except I had an entire house to roam and meals that would rival any five-star restaurant.

I darted my gaze up to the sky and noticed the sun was at its highest peak above me. The scent of roasted vegetables and aromatic jasmine rice reached my nose. It was definitely lunchtime.

Taking my time to go to the table, when I entered the kitchen area, I gasped.

“Did I scare you that badly, Endymion? Your face is pale, like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I sat at the table while my heart hammered in my chest. “Well, I’ve been alone for days. Seeing you here is almost like seeing a ghost.”

She cackled at my statement as though it was a joke. Maybe I was the joke to her.

This place was scrambling my brains. I needed to find out a way to escape and soon.

“Well, I’ve been making preparations, of course. And I have excellent news. Prezios took it upon himself to contact your parents and they are arriving soon! Just in time for the ceremony.”

I’d picked up my fork while she carried on, but I stopped all action when she said the word ceremony. Not to mention, it was bullshit that Prezios got to contact my parents, but I was stuck here not able to contact anyone, not even walk outside if I wanted—the poisonous plants and that break in the veil were my only friends now.

“What ceremony is that?” My tone made me sound like I was bored, which was exactly what I was going for.

“Oh, you silly thing. For your mating ceremony, of course. That’s where I’ve been these days, planning and prepping for the greatest day of your life! The dress will be ready for a fitting tonight. I’ve been waiting a lifetime for this!”

The fork clamored to the plate, making a sound almost like breaking glass. I stood, making the chair fall backward behind me.

“What did you say?”

After all, if I was going to rain down on this woman like Hades, I wanted to clarify exactly what she had said.

“Endymion, come on. You had to see this coming. Did you think Prezios had been invited here for your health? No, he was courting you, making sure that your mating was solid before I proceeded with the ceremony. But it’s fine. Don’t worry about a thing. He is announcing his devotion to the mating to everyone on this side of the veil.”

His devotion to the mating, not to me.

Not that I cared.
