CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I DON’T WAIT UNTIL the afternoon. I’d rather hang out with him all day if I can. When I get there, Hillary’s just pulling cinnamon rolls out of the oven.

“Oooh,” I say, but she slaps my hand before I can snag a taste.

“Those are for the ladies.”

“What ladies?” I ask, sneaking some of the fruit salad on the counter. “Is that ginger? I’ve taught you well.”

“It’s a recipe. I’m having some ladies over for brunch. If you ever called first…”

“Whatever. I’m here to see Chance, anyway.”

“You are?”

“Yeah,” I say, rolling my shoulders back defiantly. “We’re going to the art museum.”

“You are.” Her tone is flat and skeptical, and I resent it all. I happen to know my nerd loves the art museum. It’s completely plausible.

“Yes!” I say, throwing out my hands. “What, you think I’m just making all this up?”

“Kinda,” she says, smirking as she licks a bit of frosting off the side of her hand.

“That would be ridiculous, and I’m not you,” I say, skating across the floor to Chance’s room. “Ready to go to the art museum?” I ask loudly as I arrive at his open door.

Chance looks up at me, clearly perplexed, then down at his t-shirt and sweatpants. They’re a little crummy from the toaster pastry still in his hand, and he wipes them off.

“Um. Yeah. Let me just change.”

I stand in the doorway with my hands in my pockets until I notice he’s looking at me weird.

“Could you…” He motions with two fingers to the side.

“Oh.” I step inside and start to close the door, but his eyes widen.

“No,” he whispers, “you have to step out, remember?”

Right. Privacy. Because only someone who’s already seen him naked would step inside when he says he needs to change…

“I’ll just be out here, eating cinnamon rolls,” I announce. “Take your time.”

“You’re not getting a cinnamon roll,” Hillary says again as I wander back into the kitchen.

“You should put blueberries in this salad.”

“I don’t have any blueberries.”

I don’t mention that there are frozen ones in the freezer that she could defrost since I only know they’re there because I kind of elbowed Chance in the chest the other day while we were banging and he needed ice. And I can’t exactly admit that.

“Who’s coming over?”

“Some gals from my program. Raina, Posey, Giada. And Janey.”

“Huh.”

She’s fanning her baked goods with a large cookie sheet like they do on those baking shows I don’t watch.

“What time are they coming?”

“Um. Ten minutes?”

I look around; it’s clean, but she doesn’t look ready. “You want me to get out plates or something?”

“Oh, would you? You’re a lifesaver, Col.”

I smile as I wash my hands and get out the plates and silverware. I even find fancy napkins tucked away in the back of a cupboard that coincidentally also has candles. I hope she doesn’t ask how I know that, either.

After a suspiciously long time, Chance opens his door wearing jeans and a T-shirt with a miniature, scale model of the solar system on it in a vertical line.
