Chapter Thirteen: Cats On A Hot Tin Roof

Logan

The interior seemed dark and after the sunlight outdoors, I had to allow my eyes to adjust. Not hard as in our unit, we had to do this a lot. Then again, we all had night vision as well. I felt naked without my gun too. It had been on me or some kind like it for the last four years. Part of me. Part of the life I lived now.

Who would have ever thought I wanted to be a fucking engineer of all things. Here I was undercover, as a bouncer in a strip club while protecting an NSA agent. No one could have written a more fucked up story than my life. Yet, this kind of thing was probably more appealing than sitting in some office. I’d been a peaceful man all those years ago when I had been with Olivia. Now, I never experienced a peaceful moment.

If anyone would have told me I would be in this place today, heading in to find an evil madwoman who threatened a whole family… Not just a family but the whole fucking town. Yeah, I would have said they were crazy. Hell, maybe I was insane and had been caught inside my own nightmare for too damned long.

Following Mac, we came to an office door in the hallway. ‘Security’ He knocked on the door.

“Yeah, bring him in,” a gruff voice called out.

Opening the door, Mac motioned me inside.

I stepped over the threshold and saw a large man behind a small desk.

“That’ll be all, Mac,” the larger man said.

Mac nodded then smiled at me, as he left.

“So you’re Ace, eh?”

I nodded.

“Have a sit.” He motioned to the chair. “I’m Dominick. Everyone calls me Dom.”

I stepped over and sat in the chair.

“You ever bounced before?” he asked.

“No sir.”

“Sir, huh? Yeah, I checked you out. You served.”

I again nodded.

“I got one question.” Dom steepled his fingers. “Why are you applying here for a job?”

I shrugged. “I got injured in the Army and that injury is seen as a handicap for most of the jobs I could get. Well, as security.”

He looked interested as he sat forward. “Oh?”

“Yeah, lost my leg.”

He raised his brows at this. Apparently, he didn’t know about this fact. “I couldn’t even tell.”

“I got lucky. They had some new bionic leg and I happened to be in the first ten who received one. It’s different from the ones most get. All digital and lightweight. I did my PT and got out, not knowing what I was gonna do. Traveled a bit and was in New Orleans, but it was too expensive to live there.”

He gave me a nod. “That it is.”

“Some guy there told me that Ramton had clubs and the nightlife was busy. So I figured, I’d see if I could get a job here.”

“Yeah? Well the turnover in clubs is astro-fucking-nomical.” He shook his head. “We’ve been lucky to keep a few steady bouncers, but lots of guys can’t handle a strip club gig.
