The questions you ask will open up additional opportunities and enhance your rapport with the interviewer. Remember, the goal is to be as prepared as possible for the face-to-face interview. There is no excuse for not being prepared!
Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager
When asking questions of the hiring manager, you have to strike a careful balance. On the first interview, the questions you need to ask fall into three categories: questions regarding the company, questions regarding the department, and questions regarding the position. Though there are hundreds of possible questions to ask the hiring manager, you do have to be careful that the questions you end up asking are appropriate for your position and the situation.
Let's take an example. You are applying for a helpdesk position. You're meeting with the helpdesk manager.
Inappropriate Could you tell me the company's compounded growth rate for the past five years?
Appropriate How has the helpdesk staff grown over the past five years?
Follow-up What has driven the increase in staff?
See the difference?
In general, you can follow these guidelines to determine the appropriateness of the questions you should ask:
Ask questions that will clearly define your role in the organization.
Ask questions that will provide you with insight into the characteristics of a successful hire.
Ask questions to find out how the position or department is perceived within the organization.
Ask questions to gain a better understanding of the current challenges within the organization.
Avoid interrogation questions of irrelevant topics such as corporate officers' salaries and a "grueling" analysis of the financial statements.
Avoid questions that deal with issues outside the realm of IT.
