“Just stop talking. I want a divorce.”

Ethan puts down his bread and reaches his hand just a few inches closer to where mine are resting on the table. Staying a respectable distance away and regarding me sympathetically.

“It could be a bit of a shock, I know,” he admits. “But I’ll tell you what: since we’re going to be as good as divorced before long, anyway, why don’t we have some fun tonight? We can do whatever you want. I can get us into any Broadway show, though it’ll have to be after intermission at this point, or we could go see a movie , even go to a party, or if there’s a concert you can think I’ll give that a try if it’s so important.”

It would be so important if we were planning to stay married, or legitimately date, but for now I’ll have to look past Ethan’s anti-live music weirdness in order to appreciate his generosity.

“Do you think you could get us into Silent No More? There’s still a show later tonight, I think.”

Ethan laughs at my sudden change of heart, and I smile, just a little.

“Sheila, my d…like I said, anything you want. And we can even fit a couple more courses in before heading up there.”
