Chapter 7

I had nightmares about the Slayers. This time, when I woke up, I knew that it was all they were – nightmares. I didn’t even remember them properly. It was nothing like my visions, nothing like the nightmares I had had before I had wondered about my goal in life, about the reason for my existence in the first place.

It was because of what he had been telling me about how the Slayers used shifter skins to use their magic because Slayers didn’t have their own magic. Because without it, they were nothing. Not human, not shifter, not… Anything.

I didn’t know why it had taken me so long to find out all the facts. Hadn’t I learned it somewhere in the beginning? Hadn’t I been taught about the Slayers when I had arrived at the Academy?

It was possible. The first few weeks, at least, were a little blurry. Nurse Greta had given me sedatives to keep me calm and to help me with my grieving process so that I didn’t have moments of complete panic about the fact that I had lost my parents and set up in a world I hadn’t known before existed.

Had I sacrificed information for sanity? I wasn’t sure. I just knew that until now, I hadn’t understood exactly what it all meant.

And now, after I knew everything I needed to know about the Slayers, I knew for a fact where I belonged. And it wasn’t with them. Even if they wanted to use me, even if I was a Calm and Calms had been used to help the Slayers before, stopping the shifters from shifting to defend themselves…

Which didn’t make sense, did it? How would it be possible to use their skins if they couldn’t shift? I didn’t understand.

No, I didn’t know everything there was to know. There were certain things I still needed to figure out.

“Fiona,” Dracus said at the end of our training session on Friday morning. It was just me and Dracus in the gym. Theo had decided not to join us. I didn’t blame him – after last night in the village. He needed some time to recover. “I want you to come to the city with me.”

I frowned. “The city?”

Dracus nodded. “It’s not too far from here. I have a couple of errands I want to run.”

“What do you need me for?” I asked.

Dracus hesitated for a moment before he nodded. “All right, it’s not for errands, per se. Dante has requested a meeting with me about the recent shift of deaths.”

“Why do you need me?” I asked again. I didn’t like Dante, and I didn’t want to see him if I could help it. He made me uncomfortable, and as an Official, I felt like he should have been more of a man, not just someone hiding behind authority, scolding whenever he felt like it. He had treated Dracus horribly more than once.

“Because I have been invited to his house.”

“So, you will know where it is, then?” I asked.
