Chapter 9

“Seriously, Enrique?” Theo asked. He shot Enrique an annoying sidelong glare. Obviously, Theo had been counting on us having some alone time. Enrique was about the worst person to crash a date.

Enrique grabbed a cider from the table, shaking his head with a tutting sound. “Don’t misunderstand me, Theo, friend. I’m here on business. Should we cheer, though?” He lifted his drink. I lifted mine up, and Theo did the same, although much more reluctantly.

“Cheers.”

“What business?” Theo asked. His brow wrinkled as he dropped his voice. “Is it Council work?” Nobody in the tavern seemed to be paying attention to us. I leaned into them unconsciously.

Enrique cleared his throat and replied in a muttering voice, “You know it is, bear boy.”

An excited thrill ran through me. Enrique was on a mission! Was he sent by The Officials? A million questions ran through my mind. I leaned forward even more, enjoying the sweet aftertaste of the apple cider on my tongue. Enrique’s eyes flickered briefly toward my face.

“What’s the mission?” I asked.

Theo shot Enrique a warning look, but the lion-shifter paid no mind.

“Reports of a mysterious man dressed in black with some kind of emerald symbol on his cloak,” Enrique said. “Don’t worry, Theo. Dracus actually asked me to come find you guys. He thought you might be able to help.”

“No fair,” Theo groaned. “You got to take Fiona to New York! Why can’t I treat her to a fun outing without a mission?” He frowned, looking adorably upset.

“Don’t worry, Theo,” I said brightly. “We can still hang out while we watch for this mysterious guy.”

“Exactly,” Enrique purred and winked suggestively at me. Theo glowered at him and swatted him.

“No flirting with my date,” Theo said with a snap of his fingers. Enrique batted his eyelashes innocently.

“Me? I would never.”

Lucky for Enrique’s sassy mouth, Helda came out with a platter of the sisters’ famous meat pies. My mouth drooled as she placed the heaping plate in front of us. There must be fifty meat pies here! The aroma rose up into the air and captured everyone’s attention.

“Thank you,” I said, unable to keep my habit from thanking everyone for every single task at bay. She beamed.

“I like the polite lass. Bring her back again.”

“Will do,” Theo said and bit into a meat pie without hesitation. “This stuff should be illegal.”

I helped myself to one. The meat pie broke open into my mouth. It was amazing. Spiced meat with chopped vegetables. I couldn’t identify the sauce, but it was delicious. I practically moaned as I finished the first one. It went by so quickly!

Enrique smirked, watching me.

“Having fun, princess?” His chin tilted with a suggestive air. “You seem like you’re about to explode with pleasure from that food.”

I blushed and glared at him. “Leave me alone, Enrique. Theo’s here. You can’t bully me.” Theo nodded enthusiastically, backing me up in silence as his mouth was stuffed with food.

“I would never bully a woman,” Enrique said with a chuckle. His eyes flashed with a serious glint.
