Chapter 7

The restaurant was a few blocks further.

“I hope you don’t mind Chinese food. Well, it’s Chinese fusion food. Everything is fusion food in this city,” he explained and pointed ahead of us. On the corner, there was a chic restaurant. I could see glass bottles with lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling. A few girls hung around the entrance in chiffon of various colors. One took a drag of a cigarette. They looked as if they’d step from the pages of a fashion magazine.

I kept my gaze ahead of us. From the corner of my eye, I could see as they took covert glances at Enrique. He attracted attention with that confident stride and his finely tailored clothes. But he didn’t spare them a look. He kept his hand on my lower back as he opened the door for me and followed me inside the restaurant. A man in black suspenders glanced at us over the podium.

“We’re booked tonight,” he informed us in a voice a shade too chipper.

“Beaumont,” Enrique said easily with a lift of his lips.

The man straightened an inch. “Oh, why yes. Of course, you’re on the list.” I shot Enrique a bewildered look as the man led us back with two shiny menus. He placed us in a cozy booth at the corner of the restaurant. It was already set up.

“I’ll take those,” the host told me, gesturing to my flowers. “I’ll grab a vase for the table.”

“Oh, thanks.” I handed them over and he skipped off to the back. “What exactly is your relationship to this place?”

“I’ve been here a few times before,” he admitted with a casual shrug. “The Beaumont name gets me in certain areas well enough. I called ahead.”

The host came back with our vase along with our waitress. She stared at me, as if unwilling or unable to glance at my companion.

“Drinks?”

“Water for me,” I said politely.

“And a bottle of red for the table,” he requested. “Something dry and expensive.” My hands were itching to hold a glass of something. The teleportation had made my mouth dry…or perhaps it was the gold flecks in his eyes underneath the soft glow of the restaurant lighting.

“Everyone’s looking at us.” It was true. Couples covertly glanced over to stare at us. They must sense that something was different about Enrique.

“We’re hot. Let them stare.”

The waitress returned with our drinks and opened the bottle of wine. We clinked our glasses together.

“To escaping that damn prison,” he said dryly.

“It is a bit of a prison…”

“A bit? That’s an understatement,” he muttered and leaned back into the leather fabric of the booth. “I never wanted to go to Beast Academy.”

“No?” That surprised me. He seemed quite happy there.

“Never.” He shook his head, causing his wavy blond hair to fall. “In my family, we don’t do education that isn’t taught in the family.”

“How did you end up at the Academy then?”

“I was drafted in a way,” he said with a bitter snort. “My family didn’t have much choice.
