Abused by Therapy

Jennifer became increasingly disturbed during the following months, and had to be briefly admitted to hospital under a section of the mental health act. She was described as regressed, and acting like a six year old. When her therapy finally ended, after just over three years, she was thought to be much calmer and able to manage on her own, although ‘probably still regressed’. Her GP thought that the therapy had been helpful, but did later refer her for more psychiatric treatment.

Pat, age 30, had already told her GP that she had been sexually abused by her father, and was referred because she was ‘at breaking point and not coping well’.

[First appointment] She began by acknowledging she had very little memory of her childhood and problems at the time. She found it difficult to think back and make sense of the past times.

[Next session] Pat talked in more detail about the abuse. She had particular memories that she disclosed of being abused in her father’s delivery van. As she began to disclose this, the fog lifted on the whole memory… she knows that the abuse started long before she was 12, but still cannot say when it was. She remembers telling her mother but also remembers that her mother abused her as well when she was 14…

[Eight months later] Pat had written a letter revealing the presence of at least two further personalities. I gave her this to read and explained that she may be MPD. She had a number of features that are suggestive of a multiple personality. She often misses time and particularly recently. She feels she hears conversations in her head. She often meets people who seem to know her, and there is some suggestion that there may be personalities who took over the sexual role… She felt that the therapeutic work would never end. She then started to dissociate rather than face the things we were saying…

[Next session] Once we started talking about our conversation re MPD, a lot of things began to happen. She thought she would be able to get in touch with personalities by telephone! This immediately brought out the 13 year old who spoke through Pat. 5+ personalities – baby, 6 yrs, 9 yrs, 12 yrs, 13 yrs + several personalities older than this.

[One month later] She wanted to continue to explore her multiplicity… She was able to go back and talk about things that happened when she was a very young girl but then blocked. At that point a very small child personality took over. This was a three year old who was able to disclose sexual abuse by a woman who was looking after Pat whilst her mother was in hospital having her brother, and also the beginning of sexual abuse by her father. Even at this young age it was severe. Pat returned to herself and took the news fairly well that she had been abused from such an early age. It didn’t surprise her at all.
