Chapter 24
After some discussion, we agreed that our team would interview Robby and Lee since the homeless-man connection had been my theory in the first place. Since we had only one cruiser between the four of us, Shawn and Henry came along. We parted ways with Rickards and Newberry and said we would be in touch after the commanders made a decision on how to handle the cases that were all connected by one murderous man.
As Frank drove, I called ahead to the seventh district and told them we were en route to interview Robert Heinz and Lee Roper. We needed the best description from the only witnesses whoâd seen the mystery man and lived to tell about it.
We reached the seventh district police station at eleven oâclock. Before entering the building, we decided to expedite the interview process by having Frank and me interview Robert, and Henry and Shawn would take Lee. We had already compiled identical sets of questions to see how they answered them.
Detectives Ames and Mallory were expecting us and had both homeless men seated and ready to talk in individual interrogation rooms. According to the guard in the jail wing, the two men hadnât had access to each other since theyâd been incarcerated.
Once inside and after face-to-face introductions were made, we explained that the DNA left on the dead man did in fact match what was already in the database. That meant the homeless guys sitting in the interrogation rooms were innocent of the murder and should be free to go. Before that, though, and because they were the only people who had seen the would-be murderer, we needed their account of what the man looked like and the events that had taken place at the abandoned house yesterday morning.
We welcomed both detectives to sit in the observation room and watch as we questioned the men. Each of our police precincts was in the same boatâweâd had a murder by the same killer occur within our jurisdiction.
Frank and I entered the first room, noted as Box 1, and there sat Robert Heinzâor Robby as his friends called him. We took seats opposite him and stared at the wide-eyed drug addict. I hoped his recall of the man heâd seen fleeing from the house yesterday would be accurate. Comparing his account to Leeâs would tell us if their stories matched and hopefully provide a reliable description of the likely serial killer. The sooner we got a composite sketch or description out to the public, the better in my opinion. Since we didnât know his motivation, we had no idea if he planned to continue killing and for how long.
After getting comfortable, we introduced ourselves and explained to Robert that he and Lee would likely be released soon. What we needed was his very best account of the man they saw leave the abandoned house, and we also wanted to know what had led up to that point. I placed a legal pad and a recorder on the table.
