Use and reliance by colonisers on Aboriginal shelter

Judging by some accounts the expertise of Aboriginal builders when constructing shelters was not merely time saving or allowed for an ‘overcoming of mechanical difficulties’, as GS Lang’s (1865) anecdote about Aboriginal hut building by colonists demonstrates. Lang, an experienced bushman and others, attested that Aboriginal proficiency in building huts was truly the technical preserve of Aboriginal people – a fact that caused much mirth among Aboriginal people.
