This teacher is in the same mind-set as fraudsters (at least those who intend to pay back what they've stolen). She is somewhere between an accidental fraudster, who finds a hole in the system, and a predatory fraudster, who decides to take advantage of someone.

Imagine an individual who speeds down a deserted highway at night. No one catches her, and no harm is done. Is she a monster of the nursery? No, she's not; she's more likely a person like you or me.

Now imagine a group of people from these three categories: a political dictator, a fraudster, and you, the reader. We will imagine this group in order to think about psychopathy on a continuum.

The Role of Subclinical Psychopathy in Recruiting or Small-Time Frauds

The concept of subclinical psychopathy has been implicated as a root cause of some of the callous or destructive behavior of Wall Street. Subclinical means a set of clinical findings that do not qualify for a formal diagnosis. Qualities and skills that are actively sought during the hiring process for high-paying and competitive jobs might actually predispose those who get the jobs to psychopathic behavior. Ronald Schouten, a Harvard forensic psychiatrist, argues specifically that the following traits might serve someone well in an interview:

Glibness and superficial charm

Lack of empathy

Consistent decisions in their self-interest, even where it is ethically questionable

Chronic, sometimes transparent lies, even with regard to minor things

Lack of remorse

Failure to take responsibility for their actions, and instead blaming others

Shallow emotions

Ignoring responsibilities

Persistent focus on gratifying their own needs at the expense of others

Conning and manipulative behavior46
