What Is Your Standard?

“When I say the word purity, what comes to your mind?”

Oh boy, here it comes, Jessica thought to herself as she shifted uneasily in her chair. The boys and girls had split up for the first portion of this week’s class on the life of Jesus. The youth leader’s wife, Rebecca, took the girls to the far side of the youth hall for “The Talk.” But to Jessica’s surprise, Rebecca took the talk in a different direction than she had expected.

“Obviously as women,” Rebecca explained, “when someone says the word purity, we tend to think of sexual purity. But purity has broader meanings. Purity basically means that nothing is added or taken away from our minds or our spirits that is not consistent with the character of God.”

Rebecca’s wisdom and presentation was starting to draw Jessica into her talk, and in a loving and absorbing way she continued to talk about purity.

“Purity,” she said, “has become a strange and foreign concept in our society today. Nothing is the real thing. That’s because something has been added or taken away from just about everything we know and use today. But there is one thing, or should I say ‘one Person,’ from whom nothing had been added to or taken away from for all eternity. God is the only pure being in the whole universe.”
