Crocker Land was an illusion that grew into a lie that took on a life of its own. Borup and MacMillan turned the lie into a dream fueled by their shared love of adventure and a mutual desire for scientific advancement and manly glory. In 1914, MacMillan and his companions exposed the illusion yet left the lie intact; they never challenged Peary’s veracity, at least not publicly. MacMillan and Green were far too enamored of the commander to denounce him. Ittukusuk and Piugaattoq might have questioned Peary among their tribemates, but no one recorded their words.

Nor did the end of Crocker Land mark the end of the Crocker Land expedition. Ittukusuk and Piugaattoq were still hundreds of miles from their families. MacMillan and Green were a few thousand miles from home. None of them would reach their destination anytime soon.
