Claiming Crazy/Feminist/Bitch

My hero Dr. Maya Angelou once said, “I am a feminist. I’ve been female for a long time now. I’d be stupid not to be on my own side.”

We have to stop letting these words be our scold’s bridle. Their power needs to be wholly eviscerated.

But can we do it? Can we take these words, neutralize them, and even harness their power to help us claim space? Yes, we most definitely can. Here’s how.

DON’T SILENCE OTHER WOMEN.

Never use gender-specific silencing words when referring to other women.

Example: If you think a woman is being “bitchy,” ask yourself if the exact same behavior would be acceptable coming from a man.

If the answer is “yes” . . .

Let her speak without shame, and maybe sprinkle in a “That’s right! What she said!”

If the answer is “no” . . .

Try a different descriptor. “I feel like you aren’t listening to what the team is saying as much as you could,” rather than saying, “You know, Jane, you’re being a bit of a bitch.”
