Chapter 13
On the short drive, she mulled it over. Since Perkinsâ death, dreams and nightmares had plagued the town. And to look at Keithâs desk, it was getting worse. Was Perkins involved in some sort of magic? Nick OâBroin was certainly curious about Perkins, and Nick was already exhibiting some odd, and a few impossible, behaviors.
Tinkâs tow truck parked behind Zinniaâs red pickup outside Amity Center. Her two friends had lived in Amity Corners a lot longer than Nann. Maybe they knew Arthur Perkins.
Nann parked Cricket and pushed into the gallery. When Zinnia saw her, she turned away with enough drama and force to raise her hair. Tink, far less into drama, put her fists on her hips. She was a lot more forward than Zinnia.
âWhy are our boyfriends dreaming of you? Are you doing some kind of Druid love spell?â Tink raised the back of her hands toward the ceiling and wiggled her fingers.
Nann felt a little insulted. âDruids donât do love spells.â
âWhatâs the deal, then?â
Zinnia, still facing away, lifted her nose. âSheâs got that deputy and the smokin hot writer. Isnât that enough for her?â
âYeah. What do you need with our guys?â Tink said.
Nann remembered the dream about Tinkâs boyfriend, Manuel, cooking her breakfast with a guilty start. There was nothing untoward about that dream. Maybe she just got up later than Manuel. Or went to bed earlier. Or something. âTheyâre just dreams, guys. Iâm not after your boyfriends. Everyone in town is having crazy, mixed up dreams. But that doesnât make them real.â
Tink hung her head for a moment. âLook. Iâve shown my ears to Manuel.â
âKinky,â Zinnia said.
The shop goblin lifted a reddening face. âWhat I mean is, Manuel is the first guy Iâve been with who doesnât think Iâm a freak, or a monster. Heâs someone I trust. Weâre getting closer. Thereâs a real connection. And then all of a sudden, heâs dreaming about you, Nann. He should be dreaming about me. It feels like youâre stealing him away.â
Nann shook her head. âNope. Not doing that.â
âI canât help but think that somethingâs going on, Nann.â
âSomething is going on. I donât know what. But, câmon, Tink.â Nann gave her shoulder a light backhand. âWeâre buds. Zinn, Iâd never do that to you. You know that, right?â
Zinnia put her face in her hands, making her voice hard to understand. âYes, I know that. But it all feels so real. My fear, my embarrassment, my anger, is real. Even if these are just dreams, I canât get past my feelings. Stupid as it is, Iâm so pissed off at you, Nann.â
Tink cocked her head. âStupid, but true. Weâre officially pissed off.â
