CHAPTER SIX

INTO THE GREEN

Kayla shook her head as she paused in chopping down one of the smaller jungle trees. To her right, she could see Dave. Not harvesting cocoa beans like she’d asked him to do.

Although she’d told him one stack of food items would be fine, he’d brought more. Specifically, raw salmon. Which he was now holding out to the ocelot that’d been lurking around them.

Kayla didn’t really care about ocelots. It’d been neat to see one, but that was all. They were too nervous. You had to be all still and patient to feed one. And that didn’t even tame it! It just made it trust you more.

No, she’d take her wolf-dog Smoky any day. Smoky was tame. He’d follow her around unless she told him to sit. (He was now back at their base, where he was safe.) And he attacked any mob that attacked Kayla. Smoky was useful.

She shook her head as the spotted yellow wildcat stayed close enough for Dave to give it a fish. Great. Now it would stick around. Well, Kayla wasn’t giving it any of her food!

“Dave,” she said as her friend headed back toward her. The ocelot moved slowly after him, staying away from her. “Did you find cocoa beans?”

At least he looked sheepish at the question. “No,” Dave admitted. “I did pick up a number of jungle saplings, though. When I cut down leaf blocks.” He showed her the small versions of the big trees. “That way, we can grow our own too.”

That was true. And cocoa beans “planted” on jungle logs would grow more cocoa beans. Kayla smiled as Dave tucked them back in his inventory.

Then she looked up at the tree she was chopping with a sigh. Still a block or two left. “I want a stack of jungle tree logs. Is there anything else we want to get here? I mean, I want to explore a bit—maybe find a jungle pyramid. But I want a list just in case, so we make sure to do what we want this first trip.”

Dave, who loved lists, smiled back.

“Cocoa beans, of course. It would be neat to get some bamboo,” he said, looking around. “I haven’t seen any yet, but we haven’t looked much.”
