Gaia Servadio (b. 1938), Italian writer in several genres, now resident in England.

Hanoi with Mary Mary McCarthy, who opposed United States intervention in Vietnam, visited North Vietnam several times during the war. She published Vietnam in 1967 and Hanoi in 1968.

Rollie McKenna was a friend of Bishop’s, had visited her in Brazil and made photo portraits of her there.

the toy stove Bishop’s gift to Merrill, it is indeed a “toy” or miniature tin stove made by a Brazilian craftsman, replete with pots filled with “beans” and “rice-grain” on the burners. Bishop’s watercolor of it is reproduced on the cover of Exchanging Hats, a book of Bishop’s paintings edited by William Benton (1996).

removal to a new place Bishop moved from Brazil to the United States in order to substitute for Robert Lowell at Harvard in 1970–71. Although she never had a continuing position at Harvard, she taught courses there for several years.
