Chapter Eleven

Rune and Revia are locked in a tense staredown, while Zev and I stay watchful, showing no reaction to the threat against our lives. That doesn’t mean inside I’m not bristling like an angry porcupine. Our peaceful stay in the fae realm has taken a quick and unexpected turn.

“I’m a little surprised by your hostility, Revia,” Rune says.

“You shouldn’t be. Perhaps your time off in another world, forming bonds with sworn enemies has made you forget the needs of our people and the crimes of others.” She doesn’t need to look at Zev on that last line for us to know who she’s talking about.

“Lest we forget our own crimes,” Rune says. “And perhaps you’re right, time away has changed my mind on some things, but only because I had a chance to realize our reading of an ancient prophecy is flawed at best.”

“On what grounds? Everything else has come true, Rune. The three kingdoms are locked in eternal war. We are losing the strength of our magic. Our numbers have dwindled as our mothers cannot bear children. You’ve fallen in love with a witch and suddenly decided the prophecy has no merit. Tell me I’m wrong.”

Rune hesitates and looks at me. I know that I love him, but something about his sister accusing him of falling in love with me puts a whole new spin on our relationship.

“Yet everything you mention stems from the death of the witches. As their power has been extinguished, so has our own. The prophecy felt valid because we made it so. And might I ask, what magic do you think will be unlocked by killing an innocent child?” Rune now has a little more edge on his voice than before. “What other fae rituals fall in line with killing an infant? How far outside your moral code are you willing to step for a contested interpretation?”

Revia again turns to me, but the anger in her eyes has turned to concern. I don’t think she likes the idea of taking an innocent life. Rune’s framing might have her rethinking things.

She takes a moment and then changes the topic when she speaks. “Where is the child? I know she’s alive and I don’t believe she’s on Earth.”

I can tell Rune’s thinking of how best to play this. Sell the lie or see if the truth will set us free? I’m not surprised when he opts for the latter.

“Yes, she is here. She’s with the queen witch, hidden somewhere on the edges of the valley. You won’t find her unless Bernadette wants her to be found, however.”

Revia considers this thoughtfully. She came in with a full head of steam, but the sincerity of her brother seems to have her on a different track.

“It was wise to keep that from our parents, I think. Knowing the Last Witch was within the realm might cloud their vision.”

“It seemed like the safest version of our story,” Rune says.

The siblings share a pensive moment, and I see the similarities in them.
