Chapter Fourteen

“I found something.” Savannah held her phone out toward Gia over the All-Day Breakfast Café counter. “At least, I think I did.”

The small print on the screen blurred together into a bunch of wiggly lines. After sitting up all night waiting for word from Hunt or Leo, which never came, she could barely function before her first cup of coffee. “What did you find?”

“Breaking news. Apparently, the police have been out at the fairgrounds since early this morning.”

Gia paused, coffee pot hovering over Savannah’s empty cup. “It doesn’t say anything about a body being found?”

Savannah gestured for Gia to pour the coffee, then went back to scrolling. “An ambulance was seen leaving, but they are not reporting what happened. It says there will be more information coming as soon as the police comment and blah, blah, blah…”

Cole frowned. “Who would have even been out at the fairgrounds?”

“As far as I know, the police still have the area blocked off and under surveillance.” Earl blew on his coffee and took a sip.

While Gia finished pouring Savannah’s coffee then filled a big mug for herself, she told them both about Jeb’s visit to Genny and his subsequent trip out toward the fairgrounds. “Do you think that’s who they found out there?”

“No idea.” Cole tied an apron over his bright blue Hawaiian print shirt. “But it makes sense Jeb might go out there, maybe to talk to the police or take a look around. He did work security, after all.”

She brought them up to date on everything she’d heard and her conversation with Harley, only leaving out the information Hunt had shared about the phone records. It went without saying that whatever he shared during an ongoing investigation remained confidential.

“What do you ladies want for breakfast?” Cole asked. He already knew Earl’s order since he ate the same breakfast every morning.

Gia pressed a hand against her stomach. After Hunt and Leo left, she wasn’t able to eat much, but what she did manage sat in her gut like a rock. “Nothing yet, thanks. Maybe I’ll have something in a little while.”

“Me neither, but thank you, Cole.” Savannah shoved her phone back into her bag and rested her elbows on the counter, then lowered her head into her hands.

Cole started toward the kitchen when someone knocked on the front door. “I’ll get it.”

“Thanks, Cole.” Gia pulled out the cash drawer and put it in the register, then started counting out the change.

Cole opened the front door. “Hey, Leo… What’s wrong?”

Gia’s gaze shot to the doorway.

Leo stood with his hair sticking up in tufts, dark circles around his eyes, and his mouth firmed into a tight line. His gaze locked on Gia’s.

Her breath caught in her throat and she dropped the bills into the drawer and started toward him. “Hunt?”

“No, he’s fine. He’s at the hospital.”

Gia froze. Hospital?

Savannah lurched off her stool. “Is he hurt?”

“No, no. He’s okay.” Leo crossed the room and squeezed Savannah’s arm but didn’t stop. Instead, he rounded the counter and stopped in front of Gia.
