The next morning, I woke up early and went out to grab Jayla some breakfast while she slept. Last night the guys entered Darryl’s apartment after the police had left. They said they detected a faint smell of Amelia in his apartment, but, besides Darryl, nothing had been touched. They said it looked like she attacked him as soon as he answered the door, so it was deliberate.

“Young man,” the older gentleman said from across the street, waving me over when I returned with Jayla’s breakfast.

Jayla and I had been so wrapped up in each other that she’d never gotten around to introducing me to her neighbors, even though she mentioned them quite often. I jogged across the street to introduce myself.

“I’m George Henderson and my old lady is Gina.”

“I’m Gabriel de la Madalena. Nice to meet you, sir. Jayla speaks highly of you and your wife.”

“We think highly of her also. That young lady doesn’t have a family, so my wife and I think of her as one of our own. She had that good-for-nothing young fella sniffing around her in the early part of this year, and I told her he was up to no good, but she didn’t listen. He never made eye contact with me. My daddy always said, ‘never trust a man who won’t make eye contact, that means he’s up to no good.’ I’ve lived by those words my entire life and they’ve never failed me. I don’t know what he did, but he put her through some stuff that she wouldn’t tell us.” Mr. Henderson adjusted his pants. “Now, I have a friend that goes by two last names in my house, Smith and Wesson. If you’re just sniffing around to hurt that gal, you need to move right on down the road, you hear me?”

“I understand, sir. I don’t plan on hurting Jayla. I love her and one day, if I’m lucky, she’ll be my wife.”

He patted me on my shoulder and smiled broadly.

“Now that’s what I like to hear. She had another fella sniffing around after her a few weeks ago.”

He turned towards his house and called for his wife to come outside. She peeked out the screen door, smiled when she saw me, and came and stood next to her husband.

“Well, if it ain’t Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome himself,” she said as she gave my body a thorough once over.

“Gina, don’t start that mess this morning,” Mr. Henderson warned. “Plus, he’s smitten with our Jayla.”

“Jayla must be taking my advice because she has been hitting the jackpot lately with all you good-looking men chasing behind her.”

“Gina, what was that man’s name that came asking for Jayla a few weeks ago? The one you told Jayla about but she said she didn’t know him.”

“Oh yeah, a good-looking fella, but you don’t have to worry honey, you’re better looking. Jayla chose well. Plus, he seemed shifty, if you ask me. How are you going to court a woman and you don’t
