Chapter 10

Nathan shuddered. “I think Tyr and Nadine made up.”

“Okay,” his mother began. “Let me get this straight, boy. You’re a vampire?”

“Yes, Mom.” He’d been trying to explain to Alfred, Shirley and his mother exactly who he was now, and what was going on, but understandably, they were having difficulty grasping the concept. Alfred and Shirley finally gave up and went to bed, but his mother was tenacious. “I’m a vampire, Guillermo’s a vampire, Nadine’s a vampire…”

“Even that nice young man, Tyr?”

“Jesus.”

“Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain.”

“All right, all right. Yes, Mother. Even that nice young man, Tyr.”

“Are you sassing me?”

“No, ma’am.” Nathan’s shoulders sagged and he glanced over at Guillermo, who looked like he was going to roll out laughing at any moment.

“Nathan…” Nan’s lip quivered, “…did I really kill that man?”

“He was a vampire, too. But yes, yes you did.”

Guillermo put his arm around her shoulder. “The way you defended Nathaniel, it was the bravest thing I have ever seen.”

She pursed her lips and nodded, holding back the tears. “I didn’t even think about it, baby. I just wanted him to stop hurting you.” Her hands covered her face. “I don’t know what I’d do…” She shook her head as if to force away the awful thought.

“It’s okay, Mom. I’m okay.”

“Did Gui make you this way?” Her tone was slightly accusing.

“No, he didn’t. But it doesn’t matter who did. This is who I am now. I can’t change it.”

“But what about… heaven? When you die, what happens?”

“As long as nobody kills me, I live forever as far as I know. But, I’ve lost my human soul, so…” Nathan shrugged, feeling helpless. He’d never wanted to have this conversation with her.

“That is not exactly true, amante.”

“What’s ah-mahn-tay mean, baby?” Nan asked.

Nathan was not about to tell her it meant “lover” in Spanish, so instead he told her, “It’s just a term of affection,” then changed the subject. “What do you mean it’s not true? From what I know, you’re dead, the human soul leaves and the vampire soul comes in and takes its place. End of story.”

“I have always known there was something different about you, Nathaniel. Your struggle with being a vampire has been much harder than it should have been, your conscience never allowing you to embrace what should have been instinctually pleasurable.”

“Like taking blood.”

“Eww.” Nan grimaced.

“Forgive our indelicacy, Nan. But yes, taking blood for example, among other things.”

Nathan knew Guillermo was talking about their past relationship, when he’d had trouble accepting his feelings for Gui. “So, what do you know that I don’t?”

“When the Brotherhood attacked tonight, they tried to kill you by stripping you of your soul.”

Nathan remembered the strings of light leaving his body. “Yes.” Then he remembered the words he has two souls. “Oh, my God!”

Nan smacked his chest.

“Sorry.” He rolled his eyes. “Does this mean what I think it means? That somehow my human soul never left?”

“I believe so, ama… Nathaniel.”

“This is wonderful,” Nan squealed, then stopped. “This is a good thing, isn’t it?”

“I do not know whether it is good or bad, Nan.
