“Did you see that?” Hazel straightened her posture and scowled at Vivian Yarrow, who was at the checkout counter. “The Chief just came by with that dog of his and it growled at me!”

“The Chief or the dog?” Vivian laughed at her joke, but Hazel huffed.

“I find the Chief difficult to talk to, but that beast of his is dangerous. It growled at me and I didn’t do anything except say good morning.”

“Obviously not a morning dog.” Vivian snickered. “The Chief is a quiet guy. He’s not much for idle chit chat. Hang in there. It will get easier. Are you a cat person?”

“I’m not a pet person at all,” Hazel said with a shudder.

“You’ll not get anywhere with the Chief unless you can get that dog on your side.” Vivian pointed a finger of wisdom at Hazel and Hazel scowled.

“Did I miss anything while I was gone?”

“A couple of kids came by looking for Lori again. It seems really odd that all these kids keep coming in asking for her. Did she have a lot of friends when she was working?” Vivian flipped a price sheet over and began writing on the back.

“I never noticed,” Hazel said. “I was always in the back getting things set up and I left her out front. I wasn’t aware she was so popular. She always seemed rather sullen to me.”

“I think she was just a quiet girl. Do you want me to take the deliveries when I go? Cecil should be here shortly.”

“Yes, there are two of them ready and they both go to the hospital.” Hazel pointed to the box she had placed behind the counter.

“Somebody’s at the back door,” Vivian said as the buzzer sounded.

“Oh, I’ll get it. I’m expecting a delivery today.” Hazel rushed to the back room and pulled the curtain shut just as the front door chimed.
