Chapter 11
Addison hurried through her last appointment for the day, anxious to check on her mother. Mom didn’t want to hire anyone else through the agency, and Addison had gone along with that, even though she was worried about her mother remembering to take her meds . . . and worried about her overall mental state.
“Look, look, look!” Mom jumped up and down like a toddler when Addison walked into the living room. “Read it. It’s from Wil—I mean Oliver.” She smiled as she pushed an envelope at Addison. “I’m going to have to get used to that, calling him Oliver. Read it.”
Addison was glad to see her mother so happy, but cautious about sharing her mother’s joy until she heard what Oliver had to say. And even then, she wasn’t sure if she wanted her mother involved with someone like him. She pulled the letter from the envelope.
My Dearest Lee Ann,
I don’t know what you’ve been told about my departure, but let me just say this—I’ve had four great loves in my life. The Lord, my beloved wife Claire, my grandson Jackson (Logan) . . . and now you. Yes, there were lies and betrayals. But please know that I wasn’t lying when I said I love you.
Addison took a deep breath. Jackson. His name is Jackson. She kept reading.
Perhaps I shouldn’t make excuses for what we did, but I guess I will anyway. I had cancer, Lee Ann, and while I was prepared to meet my Maker, I wasn’t sure Jackson could handle another loss. He loved his grandmother very much. Claire and I raised Jackson (we’re the only ones who call him that, others just call him Jack). He’s a good boy. Or, I guess I should say, he is a good man. Although, I look at the man he’s become, and it’s mindboggling where all the time went.
I was in the United States (yes, I really was born in Surfside Beach, Texas) for cancer treatment. Things got complicated, and well . . . next thing you know, we were both being sent back to Australia. And I’ve been told we can’t go back to the United States.
I’m asking you from the bottom of my heart to forgive this old man. I’ve enclosed a voucher for a round-trip ticket to Australia. Or just make it one way—that’s what I’ll be hoping for. My boy tells me our homeland is on your bucket list, anyway. Come to the Australian Outback and let an old guy show you around. He’d be willing to love you till the end of time if you’d have him. Have I mentioned that I love you?
Addison couldn’t help but smile, but she wondered how he could afford such a gift since she’d gotten the impression that neither Logan—Jack—or Oliver had much money. She glanced at her mother, whose face glowed like a new bride, blissfully happy and hopeful for the future. Addison knew her mother had forgiven Oliver before she even read the letter.
I’m
