Dear John,

I hope this letter finds you well. Unfortunately, I can’t say today has been one of my best, but at least I get to write to you.

A student came into my office and I recognized the look in his eyes. Without going into detail about his experience, he reminded me of the dark days when I lived with my father. He’s the main reason I got into my line of work.

I don’t think I was an effective advocate today. I hate seeing my students living through the same situations I did. It doesn’t help that my day started in the dumpster with my father breaking yet another promise he made me. Disappointment is my constant companion when it comes to him, so why do I still hurt when he resorts to form? I wish I could quit him.

More and more, corresponding with you is the best remedy to restore my equilibrium and peace of mind. Did you get the last batch of cookies I made? I admit that I end up smiling as I wait for them in the oven because I picture you in a knock-down, drag-out brawl over them. I made extra this time for you to share, but I doubt you will. You’ve made it clear that you want all my cookies for yourself.

Please tell me you aren’t one of those people who will eat cookies with soda or orange juice. I’d be hard pressed to send you any more goodies after that level of disrespect.

Who am I kidding? It would be well worth the price if my baking brought a smile to your face. Until then, keep safe.
