So, What Does It Actually Mean to Be a Good Manager?

As you find your footing in this new role, you’ll be wise to create a core list of attributes that are important to you, and that’s true whether you’re launching into management in a brand-new company or you’ve moved up the ladder under the same employer. If you want to actually receive the respect you need to get the job done, you need to be worthy of that respect in all aspects of your behavior. Respect is difficult to gain, as we all know, and it is extremely easy to lose. But even by thinking about the leadership qualities you most admire—and the ones you most detest—you will start to inform and shape your own leadership style. Right from the beginning, it’s important to be intentional about how you are going to show up for your team as a manager. Small, simple gestures will help you build that respect over the long term.

So how do you start? You start by thinking about the people who have inspired you over the years and all of the qualities you admire most in them. There are your old bosses, of course, but leaders can come in many forms—teachers, athletic coaches, aunts and uncles, colleagues, even your best friend’s grandma or maybe that lady who is always holding court in the neighborhood coffee shop. Think about who among all the people in your life has qualities you respect and write those attributes down. Then, think further out: Who have you seen on TV or TikTok or read about that exemplifies the values you respect? Is it José Andrés, Martha Stewart, or Marcus Samuelsson? Maybe it’s Elon Musk or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. What are the leadership qualities among your favorite heroes or achievers (those who motivate you, those you respect for whatever reason) that speak to you personally? Write them down, too.

Now, flip the pancake. Think of the qualities in leaders you have despised. Why didn’t their style work for you? Write about that.

Here’s a simple example of how this list worked for me. I had so many chefs who would come into the kitchen, bark orders, and then disappear until service time. I hated that experience and wanted to make sure my team knew I was there and available. That ended up becoming one of my core leadership principles throughout my career—show up and show that you care—and it was something I strived for from the time of my first management role. When you experience leaders who are not willing to do the tough jobs, or even just show up in small ways, you can feel the subsequent lack of respect and hard feelings that follow, and it makes things hard for everyone. I never wanted people to doubt my commitment to our shared success.

When I was working as an executive chef, one of the ways I tried to earn respect from my team was by being one of the first to arrive at work
