CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Fiona hung back when they arrived at the station. While Humphries walked on ahead, she turned towards her car and called her mother. She didn’t answer, so Fiona left her a quick message asking her to ring her back. She pocketed her phone and caught up with Humphries, waiting by the door. Holding the door open, he asked, “Who were you ringing?”

“It’s not important. They didn’t answer anyway,” Fiona replied. “I’m going to find Abbie. Let me know how the interview with Paula’s parents goes.”

Fiona quickly found Abbie, who was in her element organising the three constables. Fiona introduced herself to them, thinking Abbie would make a far better manager than she ever would. After a quick update over a coffee, Fiona and Abbie walked down to the interview rooms.

Fiona took an instant dislike to Dan Murden the second they walked into the interview room. He was a small, weasel-looking man with dark hair and acne-scarred skin. He was the sort who would look grubby five minutes after stepping out of the shower. His bored scowl was full of disdain as he grunted and rolled his eyes to acknowledge their entrance.

Having read through his old charge sheet, Fiona knew it would be a battle to remain unprejudiced. Several more victims had recalled attending events where he provided entertainment, and Eddie was pressing the final few for where they might have crossed paths. Having direct contact with many of the victims was suspicious, but so far, that was all they had. As well as his transit van, he had owned a white Ford Fiesta for the past six years. They had nothing to connect him conclusively, and it was questionable whether they had grounds to search his home, especially if he was able to provide alibis for the nights of the burglaries. They were also scratching around to think of who his partner might be.

After the formalities for the tape were complete, Abbie asked Murden if he knew why he had been brought in.

“Not really, no,” Dan replied petulantly. “I was hoping you were going to tell me.”

“You’re helping us with our enquiries concerning the recent burglaries targeting the elderly in this area,” Abbie replied in a businesslike manner.

“I’ve always thought that was a bunch of kids, that your lot were too useless to catch.”

“Any particular reason for thinking that?”

“Not really. Just a feeling after reading between the lines of the odd newspaper article,” Dan said. “They’re running rings around you, so I suppose you have to make it look like you’re doing something, but how you think I can help you is beyond me.”

“Well, the thing is, we’ve discovered many of the victims had recently been entertained by your company and remember talking with you during or after the events,” Abbie said, a little too sarcastically for Fiona’s liking. Dan was trying to rattle Abbie, and she hoped she wouldn’t bite. It wasn’t an interview she wanted to take over if she could avoid it.

Dan leaned back in his chair and gave a false laugh.
