Chapter Fifteen

Angie

Angie rushed through her last few questions and started to follow Vivi. Lurching to a stop, she turned back to Dr. Kelly.

“I will have more questions for you, understood?”

He gave a slight nod.

“If you go anywhere, try to disappear, I will ruin your name and legacy. I’ll dig up whatever else you did. You know I can. And I’ll be able to say whatever I want and you won’t be here to defend yourself.”

With that, she stalked out and found Vivi on the grass. She took her under the arm and pulled her to her feet.

“Come on, let’s get out of here.”

She got them both back in the small RV and drove out of the community of luxury houses.

Vivi had gone to the back of the RV and Angie couldn’t see what she was doing...lying on one of the beds? Galaxy was back there too.

She put her worry for her sister aside to focus, trying to keep everything straight in her head while driving. The strange feeling of “this is my life” hit her. It sometimes did when she thought about living in an RV, moving around and looking for people. Now Vivi was here, a part of her life, too. What did she make of that? Did she want Vivi in her life for good?

Focus. She needed somewhere to park and get her thoughts down. They’d gotten lucky because the doctor’s house in Arlington Heights was in the top part of Washington Park, a big area that included the Portland Zoo, the International Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden, and Hoyt Arboretum, which had miles of hiking trails. There was space to park along the road outside of the parking lot, which would hopefully work for overnight parking. Dusk was quickly turning to night—the day was gone but she’d actually accomplished a lot today.

Vivi filled a water bowl for Galaxy while Angie sat at the table and typed everything out while it was fresh.

Galaxy’s lapping drowned out her clicking keys. Finally the dog went to Vivi, sitting in the turned-around front passenger seat, and all but climbed into her lap. Vivi buried her face in Galaxy’s fur coat.

“I’m sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t have made you go and hear all that.”

“You didn’t force me to go. I needed to.” Vivi looked up with teary eyes. “Why aren’t we pressing charges?”

“We might...but do you want to stop here, or find out who really did this?” Angie realized she hadn’t told Vivi about her threat to the doctor. They could deal with him later.

“Meredith did this,” Vivi said with venom, surprising Angie. She added, “And that man, whatever his name was. George something?”

“George Harkin. Tall, mean face, light red hair.” Angie added that into the notes. “We’re getting close.”

“What do you mean?”

“I thought this was a big mess before, but it’s pretty straight forward. George Harkin knew my father Luke, and he saw a chance to make money. I don’t know how it all came together, but we have a lot more of the picture now.
