Chapter 11

“Annie thinks he followed her here?” Moira asked incredulously.

I glanced at the list of proposed floats in front of me before looking up at Moira. “That’s what she said. He was a warlock and had the power to make objects do things. According to her, his power was weak, so it was mostly a nuisance. She said she thought her troubles would be over when he died, but now she came here and things started happening again.”

Moira drummed her fingertips on the table. We were in the auditorium at Charm Cove High School in the thick of planning for the upcoming parade. In one corner, there were groups of people working on the construction for the floats. There was another group working on decorations. Moira and I got assigned the most loaded task—choosing the order of the floats for the parade. The Christmas fairy float always went first, but the rest had to be decided. We had sorted through applications and now had a list we were in the midst of paring down.

“There are spells that can be cast to essentially create a haunting after someone dies,” Moira said.

“I know. I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never known it to actually happen. How would he follow Annie here though? She said she didn’t experience any of this in Boston after he died.”

Delia was working with Celia on fashioning bows that would go on the wreaths that hung on the front of every float. “How’s it going over there?” she called. “We need to know how many to make.”

“Give us a few more minutes,” I called in return.

“I think we randomly pick names out of a hat. We’ve whittled it down to all of the complete applications,” Moira suggested.

“Perfect. Let’s make it random. Do we have to tell anybody that’s what we did?”

Moira grinned. “I think we should. No matter how we do it, people will be pissed off at us.”

We commenced to write the names of the businesses and their respective floats on small scraps of paper, which we folded and placed in a small plastic bowl.

A few minutes later, Moira held up our final list after the order had been drawn. Emma Good, a cousin and Delia and Celia’s older sister, crossed the room to peruse the list. “How are we letting people know?”

“We set up that email alert last year. I think we just email all the applicants and let them know. I don’t know why they haven’t done it this way before,” Moira commented.

I laughed. “I’m sure somebody thought of it. You know how this parade is. People get a little nuts. The competition for the best float is insane.”

“True. I’m just glad we’re done being the Christmas fairy. The twins are perfect for it because they can take turns.”

After Emma got called away to help with something else, Moira looked toward me. “Okay, has Annie talked to Daniel yet?”

“She called to tell me she planned to talk to him today. I offered to go with her, but she preferred to go talk to him privately.
