Chapter Eighteen
Elodie couldnât stop shaking.
No matter what she did, what she said to herself, her entire body was trembling.
And her brain was currently the consistency of porridge.
What had they done?
What had she done?
How had she, in the space of mere days, become someone who would kiss a man like that? A virtual stranger, no less. And whatâs more, be begging him for more!
Hope would be delighted. Francesca, probably impressed. Only Sophia would be suitably disgusted. Not because of Elodieâs awful behavior, but because she was twelve and not yet interested in the opposite sex.
She heard Lord Brentford open the door, heard his brief conversation with whoever had unwittingly saved her from herself.
Because it wasnât the viscountâs fault, Elodie had to admit. Sheâd been as willing as he, as enthusiastic. More so, actually, since only one of them had been begging shamelessly, and it hadnât been him.
Elodie felt tears of confusion and shame smart her eyes.
She was tired; that was all. It had been a fraught and exhausting couple of days.
Besides, once they got to London, sheâd never see Lord Brentford again.
Ignoring the foolish stab of pain she felt at the thought, Elodie spun to look out the small window overlooking the still-bustling stable yard.
She heard the sound of the door shutting but didnât turn around. Couldnât turn around. Her emotions had her locked in place as though sheâd grown roots.
The silence stretched painfully as she waited to see if he would speak to her, what he would say.
But after eons, he merely sighed.
Holding herself rigidly still, she listened to the rustling sound of clothing being removed, swallowing a lump in her throat as she imagined his movements.
The splash of water told her that he was washing and, wanton as she now apparently was, she couldnât help but wonder if heâd removed those damp clothes whilst freshening up.
After what felt like hours, he spoke.
âYouâre not going to sleep standing up, are you?â
Though his voice was light and teasing, she sensed the undertone of something darker lurking beneath it and, Lord save her, but she reacted to it immediately.
She had to face him, she knew that, and yet she could not seem to get her body to turn around.
What if he looked at her with disgust? What if he refused to take her to London now because of her indecorous behavior?
Or worst of all, what if he assumed that she would allow him toâ¦toâ¦
She couldnât even think it without feeling sick.
Well, there was only one way to find out, she supposed.
Elodie straightened her shoulders and turned to face him.
She couldnât help but think of what Hope or Cheska would say.
Hope would probably laugh it off as nothing serious.
Cheska would insist that if Elodie were indecorous, then he was just as bad.
But her sister didnât understand that things were different for ladies. Or rather, didnât care that they were supposed to be.
Her breath hitched once more as she took in his appearance. To her relief, he was dressed, or partly so in any case.
