Luke was very quiet on the drive back to Scotland Yard. When they had hung up from Dr. Nicky Bowman, he hadn’t said anything.

For once, Hana wasn’t sure what he was thinking.

‘What’s up?’ she said, weaving her way through south London traffic towards the river.

‘I’m irritated.’

Hana couldn’t help but laugh.

‘I’m sorry? Why?’

‘Nicky is my therapist.’

‘Luke, she’s not exclusively yours. You know that right? She has a whole raft of clients.’

Luke sighed.

‘Yes, of course I know that. That’s not my point. The point is that Nicky specifically recommended this group grief counselling to me, knowing full well that she had another client of hers attending it. We were bound to meet.’

‘And?’

‘And…’

Luke trailed off, not actually having a point and unsure as to why he felt so upset about this revelation. Did he feel suddenly less important as a client? Was he somehow blaming Nicky for what had happened to Evie Glover? That was a preposterous thing to think.

‘Never mind,’ Luke said. ‘Let’s just leave it.’

Luke and Hana had arranged to meet with Nicky at her home later that evening, once she had finished her day with her clients. Luke told himself that he needed to sort through his emotions about this before they saw her. He needed to be able to focus.

When the detectives arrived at Scotland Yard, they entered with their security passes and did not get into the lift for the seventh floor at the Serious Crime Unit. Instead, they walked past the lifts and through the emergency exit door that they knew would take them on a short cut to the underground section of the building where Dr. Chung’s lab was located.

The faint sound of instrumental jazz could just be heard over the clicking of their shoes on the concrete floor. One of the overhead fluorescent lights flicked on and off.

‘I don’t know why they had to make it so creepy down here. It’s like a horror movie,’ said Hana.

Luke turned around to give her a look and then continued down the hall. When they reached Dr. Chung’s office, they poked their heads inside but it was empty.

‘She must still be in the lab,’ Luke said.

Following the music, they reached the small laboratory at the end of the hallway. Evie Glover was on the metal table in the centre of the room, covered with a sheet. Dr. Chung was sitting on a stool in the corner, sipping a mug of tea and staring at her.

‘Dr. Chung,’ Luke said in greeting. ‘You wanted to see us?’

Hana looked at the doctor and saw that she was tired. It wasn’t physical exhaustion that was etched on her face, but something deeper — the result of being bombarded by the capacity for cruelty by another human being.

‘This one is getting to me,’ Dr. Chung said.

‘I know,’ Hana replied, and she shut the door to the hallway, as if to protect the four of them in this room from whatever evils were lurking just outside.

Luke knew from experience that Dr. Chung wouldn’t have called him and Hana in if there wasn’t something that didn’t seem right with the victim.
