Chapter Twelve"Can I help you, sir?" the Refuge Cellular clerk asked.
Joel propped an elbow on the chest-high counter. "I'm Joel Montgomery. I have an eleven o'clock appointment."
"Yes, sir. For service setup. Just a moment. The store owner wanted to see you."
The employee tapped on an office door and exchanged words with someone inside before turning back to Joel. "He'll be right with you."
"No problem." Joel watched Amber browse.
Seconds later, an African-American gentleman in a charcoal suit stepped out, extending one hand beneath the counter and the other across to Joel. "I'm Mr. Johannson. Nice to meet you, Mr. Montgomery."
"You, too." Joel shook his hand.
He pulled out two cardboard boxes. "We have your order here. If you'll step down to the second booth, we'll get this service set up for you and the missus."
Joel grinned and moved where the man indicated.
"My children attend Faith Elementary. I was there the day the Dream Corps choppers dropped you down. My little girl's the one who sang." The man's dark face beamed. "She thinks she's gonna be the next American Idol."
Joel chuckled. "She might be. I get chills remembering her voice. That was really special, what those kids did for us."
"That was really special, what you did for Bradley and those kids. It floored me they all kept it secret from Bradley and Miss Stanton an entire two weeks. That's a miracle in itself." He chuckled. "Listen, I have to run an errand, but my associate can assist with all your needs. Pleasure meeting you. I hope to see you around more."
Joel motioned Amber over. She approached the booth.
"Have a seat. We'll get you fixed up," the associate said.
She looked to Joel with a teasing gleam. "Fixed up?"
The man stretched a handheld to her. She eyed it. "For me?"
Joel nodded. "They're like Manny's BlackBerry, but they do a little more. It's a phone, e-mail companion, text messenger, Webcam. It does GPS, all sorts of other stuff."
"You'll never lose touch with that thing." The clerk handed Joel a form that looked like a receipt. "Service is paid on both phones for two years. Unlimited use. No roaming charges, no long distance. No hidden fees. You should be all set."
Joel handed the form back. "There's a mistake. I haven't paid yet. I just filled out what I wanted. I'm paying today."
"The phones and two years of service are paid up, compliments of the owner." The clerk tapped a note on a red, white and blue linen postcard. Joel picked it up, reading:
Freedom costs so these phones do not. Please accept our gift as appreciation for your dedication and sacrifice to our country. May God grant time with your loved ones, and bless you as you serve and protect this nation. We know freedom comes with a price which most of the free will never know about. So this is the least we can do. Stay the course. Show you care. Stay in touch. Sincerely, Refuge Cellular Staff.
