Answering these and related questions will cause us to see the giants in the land, and ourselves, differently. The choice is now before us, and we can choose life.
With their motto “Never Again, Never Forget,” the Rwandan people have taught me that choosing life includes remembering and speaking the truth, even if that feels like I’m living as a foreigner, a pilgrim, or a sojourner in my own country. Cultivating this discipline of remembering and truth telling motivates us to prepare and build for the life of freedom that we want.
As I see God’s kingdom more clearly, I am keenly aware of the dangers that are present in the Promised Land and in our modern world. When the Western way is not the way of God, I must reject it. When the Israelites did not see rightly after God brought them out of Egypt, he had to raise up a younger generation who would reject the ways of Pharaoh. Then God taught them how to live anew. If we desire to respond in obedience like the second generation of Israelites did, we need to remember and renew our minds. Surviving the wilderness requires us to have a different spirit, like the spirit the Lord put into Caleb (Numbers 14:24), so we can follow God wholeheartedly.
People are lining up for the census of those ready for a new way of life—a way that is just and equitable for all. Get ready if you want to be counted!
