Chapter Four
Alex drove the truck, watching Edythe as she peered out the window. She hadn’t said a word to him thus far, so he was left wondering what she thought of the whole situation… although he wouldn’t ask…
“What’s on your mind?” She suddenly brought up, eyes on him now. “You seem pretty distraught…”
He shrugged, clutching the wheel with a mutter. “I just… I’m not sure if I’m ready to go back… you know… into doing all the Blank case stuff…” He raised a single hand and waved it around.
Edythe blinked and smiled. “Hey, it’s alright… you can trust me on this, you don’t need to decide any time soon…”
“I want too… but I don’t at the same time… for Jen… but what about Luna? What about me?” He gave her a concerned look, her eyes shifting as she sighed.
“You’re the only one who can decide that Alex… but not right now, okay? Give it some thought.” She looked back out the window, the truck going silent again.
Alex waited, finally finding a topic to speak of. “So, what do you think about this lady?” He asked, changing the topic completely. “She seems pretty… odd…”
“Well, supposedly her daughter did die.” Edythe said, looking at the roof. “We have to have a bit of sympathy… even the hardest people to deal with can be the most broken… or the ones with the most unspoken words.”
Alex turned into a driveway, opening his door. “Right. Well, we’ll do our best, and that’s all we really can do…”
“Darn right we’ll do our best.” She pat his back, heading for the door.

The woman fidgeted with a silver locket hung around her neck, mumbling with a quiet, soft, soothing voice. She was ghostly pale, eyes sunken into dark circles around her eyes. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days, never mind eaten in days. Her cheekbones were definitively outlined, jutting out of her skin like mountains, her loose dress looked almost too loose on her slim, boney body. Her fingernails were overgrown and dirty her blond hair the same way. She looked a mess to say the very least, but Alex tried his best to give her a reassuring smile.
“Good afternoon… Mrs…” He trailed off, not knowing her name. “We came here to see about the disappearance of your daughter…”
This caught the woman’s attention; however, she didn’t say anything more about the matter, going back to muttering.
Edythe smiled as well. “Ma’am, we really do need your help with this investigation… two of our colleagues claimed they couldn’t figure anything out because you wouldn’t so much as utter a word about her…”
“We’re just here to help… to see if she’s still out there.”
The woman chuckled, whipping a single tear from her boney, red cheek. “Little, little baby… little, little girl… rock a bye… rock a bye… water… sweet girl… innocent girl… sweet and innocent like a flower… sweet girl… baby girl… sweet… tired…”
They weren’t getting anywhere. “Alright, we’ll go take a look… stay here, please… we’ll be back…
