Chapter Nine

“Come on, I’ll get you settled in a room,” I say.

Jaxon looks back at the others, but I can tell he’s relieved to be walking away from their scrutinizing eyes. Together, we walk down the hall.

I’m listening for the activities of the others behind me. Davorian and Nisha go to the coms, getting the word out to all of the other agents across the world that the gatekeeper has been found.

I wonder then, will they all return here? They must, I suppose. Because if the DarkVerse gatekeeper touches the gate, we have to be prepared to go back right away. We can’t wait for the other agents to cross the entire world to go through.

With that in mind, I aim for one of the private rooms, furthest from the bunkroom.

It’s about to be filled once more.

I turn into it and push the door open. “Here you are,” I say.

Jaxon takes it in as he walks inside. It’s simple. Really simple. There is a twin sized bed pushed against the farthest wall. A small nightstand next to it. A chair in the corner. And that’s it.

“Still feels like a prison cell,” Jaxon says as he steps inside. “With no windows.”

“Yeah, well, windows aren’t our favorite things in this place,” I say with an exasperated sigh.

“Can you really see in the dark?” Jaxon asks, stating it as if it just occurred to him.

“Of course,” I say. “Everyone in the DarkVerse can. Truth be told, I felt half blind in the LightVerse for the first three years. It took a long time for my eyes to adjust.”

Jaxon turns in the room, taking stock of it all. But he turns, resting his hands on his hips. “It just doesn’t seem right to me, living in the dark. It’s just…unnatural.”

I scoff at that. “What about living in the sun is natural? Think about it. The sun is constantly trying to kill us. It burns you. It gives you cancer. It wears your skin into leather. You get heat exhaustion. It even evaporates your water, which you need to survive. So if you’re talking about living in an unnatural state, I’d argue it’s you guys.”

It’s a rare thing, so when it happens, my heart does this little…skip. Jaxon smiles. Not something big. Really, it’s just in one corner of his mouth. But it tugs there, revealing his white teeth. “You put it that way, and for some reason you start to make sense.”

I smirk and nod. “Get some rest,” I say, standing in the doorway. “I’m going to make some lunch. I’ll bring you some in a little bit.”

He doesn’t argue with me. Jaxon just sinks down on the bed and lies back, staring up at the ceiling.

I step out and pull the door closed behind me.

Not that he has much privacy. There’s a big window looking into his room.

Ascelin comes walking down the hallway. In his hand, he holds a camera and a screw gun.

“Really?” I ask, fixing him with a glare.

“He said I
