And as members of the Roman Catholic Church have lately learned of the sexual violation of minors by many priests, bishops and archbishops—and the Catholic clergy has, by no means, a corner on this offense—they have at least a specific saying of Jesus to guide them as they gauge the severity of the wrong (given the Christian church’s tendency to excessive degrees of punishment, it may be worth noting that Jesus makes no personal attempt to drown a child molester nor does he instruct anyone else to do so). In the absence of detailed guidance from the foundation voice of Christianity—Jesus himself—in the matter of sexual condemnation, how then can virtually the entire Christian church, its ministers and many millions of its adherents, almost always respond to what they themselves define as sexual sin with the rapid conviction and fervent condemnation they so readily display?
