Chapter Eight

Quentin knew exactly why Red had pushed them both outside. It hadn’t been for Ben to walk off his breakfast… it echoed their early morning shower. Red, in his unfailing need to give Quentin the world, had wanted Quentin to have time alone with Ben so they could connect.

Gods, I love that bear.

He walked alongside the human, a comfortable silence falling between them. He knew that Ben was still reeling inside and could almost smell the smoke coming off the man’s head. Ben needed to learn to depend on them.

“I half expected you to be gone when we woke up,” Quentin said after walking about a quarter mile.

Ben was silent a few steps. “I half expected it, too.”

“Is it really the sex that’s keeping you here?”

Ben stopped midstride and turned to Quentin. The human met his gaze. “You know it isn’t.”

“So why?” Quentin asked as he took a half step closer. “Why are you still here?”

Ben looked like he wanted to answer, but apparently the words failed him. He turned back on the trail and climbed on ahead.

“Why, Ben?”

Ben stopped and turned to face Quentin, staring down from above. He was so beautiful in his heartache that it nearly shattered Quentin. “Because I miss this.”

“Miss this?”

“I miss feeling like I belong somewhere.”

Quentin took a few steps and closed the gap. “You do belong here. You don’t have to go.”

Ben stared for a moment. “And if I were to lose you, too?”

So that was it. It wasn’t that he didn’t want them. He didn’t want to lose them. “I don’t plan on going anywhere.”

Ben’s face twisted in pain. “Do you think Mack and Eli planned to leave me, either? We don’t know when our time is up.”

Quentin grabbed Ben and dragged the man closer. “So you’ll live your life, empty, instead of giving love a second chance?”

“I am empty. I told you that.” Ben pushed against Quentin’s arms and made him let go. He took a few more steps away. “I have nothing left to give either of you, and that’s not fair. You both deserve to be loved, wholeheartedly.”

Quentin climbed to meet Ben, to stare eye to eye with their mate. “Or you could let our love in, to fill you. And maybe then, you’d find you had something to give back.”

Ben reached out and cupped Quentin’s cheek. “I see the way you and Red look at one another when you think no one else is around. I sensed your connection before I ever walked into that playroom and caught you in the act. I see the love you hold in your eyes. I won’t ruin what you two share.”

“How could you think you’d ruin us?” Quentin asked, his chest tight. “You’ll complete us.” He dragged Ben into his arms. “We’ve waited for you for a long, long time. Nothing feels right without our third.”

Ben melted into Quentin, and it gave him hope. He lowered his head to capture the human’s lips. Ben yielded to him, opening when Quent swept his tongue along the seam of Ben’s lips.
