Philip had not expected this at all. In Rome, while dreaming of Emily, he only thought of the many ways he could avenge his broken heart. Many sleepless nights had been filled with thoughts of exacting his revenge. Or, when he was out with his most entertaining friends, he would pause in the whirl of merriment to ponder how he would someday make Emily admit that she had been wrong to marry someone else.

He was now a guest in her home. Emily Barlow had been in his company for some time now. The chance he had always dreamed of was his. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to tell her she was a fool, nor could he upbraid or taunt her in any way.

Why not?

He stared across the tea table at Emily, who was carefully dividing a scone into fourths for her daughter. Rose waited patiently, her already large eyes widening with greed as she gazed upon the treat.

Why?

Because he had fallen in love.

It was the truth. He took a sip of his tea, still watching the two of them.

He had fallen in love with Emily as she was now—terrified of her future and yet marching bravely forth, ready to humble herself by going back to her uncle’s house to start anew. He had fallen in love with darling Rose, so sweet, so tenderly trusting. With Emily, he was ready to staunchly defend and protect her, sheltering her from a world that had already proven indifferent and cold to her struggles. With Rose, he wanted to give her anything her little heart desired.

There was nothing for it.

The past couldn’t be changed. He set his tea cup aside, smiling at Rose, who was now gnawing happily on a bit of scone. Yet, somehow, this was better even than the future he had planned out for them when he stood in the garden that night, waiting patiently for Emily, who never arrived. He wasn’t fully aware of what love had meant back then. He had thought only in selfish terms, caring only for what Emily represented for him. He never considered, not really, what he could do for her. For years he wallowed in luxurious daydreams of retribution, never pausing to think that he could, even in the midst of his shattered existence, think kindly of Emily.

She had done what she determined must be done to secure her place in life.

Now it was up to him to convince her that her place in life was by his side.
