Cleaned up and dressed, Leroy and Jordan headed out of

their room hand in hand and to the breakfast table in the

main hall. Hunger was the only thing on Leroy’s mind at the

moment.

A feast was set out before them. Mother Sangrille must

have spent hours preparing. There was bacon and eggs,

quail, pig, pheasant, sausages of all descriptions, toast and

everything in between. The massive table was full of food.

“Eat up, Leroy. You, too, Jordan. You’ll need all your

strength for tonight,” Mother said as she handed them both

plates.

In that moment, Father Sangrille entered the kitchen,

Leroy’s elder brother in tow. “What a great spread, my wife.

You have done well.”

She slid her gaze to him. “It is Christmas, is it not?”

Father Sangrille sat, seeming to ignore what she had said,

and plonked food onto his plate. At that moment, Leroy sat,

too. The resulting glare from his father, cold and dark, made

Leroy uncomfortable, just like last night in the smoking

room.

“Your older brother, Bartel, sits before you. Know your

place if you want to re-join the clan, runt.”

Leroy’s brother smirked and came to a chair next to

Father Sangrille. “Yes, little runt. Know you place. Or Father

will have to teach you another lesson.”

Jordan lurched forward.

Leroy squeezed his hand, stopping him from doing or

saying anything for the here and now. “Not yet,” he

whispered. “Look.”

Sure enough, Mother Sangrille slowly shook her head, her

meaning clear. Now was not the time to act. “There are

many lessons to be learned, some of them not quite so clear
