Later that day, Isaac was seated in his office behind his desk and he was staring at the television that was hanging from the ceiling. They were talking about Lucian on every single news channel while simultaneously showing the sketch that Mr. Duval made. They had already received multiple calls from people who claimed to have seen and know where Lucian might be hiding, but sadly, their stories led nowhere, and Lucian was still out there. “Where the hell are you hiding, bastard?” Isaac sighed.
Right at that moment, Jeff opened Isaac’s office door and as he leaned against the doorpost and crossed his arms, he asked, “Did you inform them about Diana’s passing?”
“I did.”
“And?”
“And what? They were completely devastated when I told them that their daughter had been brutally murdered, and their hearts are torn to shreds. What else did you expect? That they were simply going to be like, ‘ah, okay. So, where do we go from here?’. Were you expecting a reaction like that?”
“Not quite,” Jeff said as he took a seat on one of the chairs in front of Isaac’s desk. “Listen, Isaac, I owe you an apology for my outburst this morning.”
“There is no need—”
“Let me finish, please. My marriage is not going great at the moment, to say the least, and with the miscarriage of my oldest daughter and my son who is currently going through a divorce… it’s been stressful, and it still is. I had a lot of frustration bottled up and this morning I took it out on you and that was, of course, wrong of me to do. I blamed you for the death of Diana, which is horrible, and I’m utterly ashamed of myself. And for that, I apologize.”
“I promised them that I would keep them safe yesterday, I gave them my word—”
“Diana made a decision to leave the house and go to a nightclub in Denver. That was her choice, not ours. Yes, maybe we should have anticipated for something like that to happen, but then again, we can’t force her to stay inside. And yes, maybe if we would have seen her sneaking out of the house and stopped her, her siblings and her mother could have changed her mind, but we can’t think about the ifs. Right now, we have to completely focus and aim all our attention towards catching this freak as soon as possible and make sure that history is not going to repeat itself. And we’re going to arrest him, of that I’m certain. You’re an outstanding detective, the finest I’ve ever met. So, it’s time for you to stop living in the past and focus on the present. You have no other choice. Do what you do best, Detective, and catch this psychopath,” Jeff said as he stood back up. “Now get back to it, all right? And keep your head up. You got work to do.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you.”
“Call me Jeff,” Jeff said with a wink as he then left Isaac’s office.
