Chapter 10

Samuel managed to work the knots loose from around his wrists and had started on his ankles when he heard the door handle jiggle.

“They’re coming,” Morton whispered harshly.

Sitting up straight, Samuel placed his hands behind his back so he’d appear to still be bound. When the door opened, he gasped as Alistair was thrown by Dirk and another man to the floor at his feet.

The situation had gone from bad to worse to heinous. His heart pounded and his pulse quickened. He wanted to grab Alistair, to hold him, if for the last time, but if he did, he’d lose the only advantage he had. Surprise. Even then, just because he’d gotten free of the ropes didn’t mean much, but maybe, just maybe…

He peered at the three who had entered behind Alistair. The woman, Dirk, and… he recognized the man almost instantly. It was the delivery guy from the photo.

Alistair moaned as Winnie nudged him with her foot. “We have a few minutes, I think.”

She held out the stone and beckoned to pony-tail guy who held a dagger in his hand.

“I’m ready, master.”

“What a good boy.” She patted his cheek. “I love an audience. Can you hear me, Alistair? I think you can. My sister Althea was a bit of a romantic it seems. Her soul can only be released by the blood of a vampire mixed with that of a human, and a willing sacrifice has to be made. Silly, really. But romantic all the same.” Winnie held out her hand, and the man with the dagger took it in his. He kissed her fingertips. “So sweet. Jonathan has so dutifully volunteered to help me complete the ritual. The human and the sacrifice.”

A flash of concern crossed Jonathan’s face. “And you’re going to make me into a vampire, right?”

“Of course, darling. No worries.” She gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “I’ve waited for this moment for too long. My power will rival that of Rebekah Greer and then that smug ass Guillermo Perez can bite my ass.”

Alistair rolled onto his back, his head brushing against Samuel’s legs. “What about your own soul?” He whispered with effort.

“I think it’s time for another shot. Dirk,” she ordered with a snap of her fingers.

The disco vampire injected Alistair again. Samuel watched helplessly as Alistair sagged under the sedation.

“I’m glad you asked. I’m touched by the concern.” Winnie snorted. “Alas, in a perfect world, I’d get to keep both souls. It’s not unprecedented. But that’s not the way it works. I will take Althea’s mortal soul into my body, while my soul will become trapped inside the stone.”

Vampire or not, the woman was completely insane. Samuel fought every vengeful thought brewing in his head. Violence was never the right response. Death was inevitable, whether it happened today, tomorrow, or fifty years in the future. He wanted to save Alistair, but not by the hand of wrath. Wrath was meant for the judgment of God.

And so he watched as Winnie turned to Jonathan. She took the dagger and cut a slice across her palm.
