We’re stepping outside of our comfort zone and challenging the old adage ‘no pain, no gain.’ Ask yourself:

• How can I grow and expand my learning

and skills within comfort?

• How am I approaching this that makes it

seem hard or uncomfortable?

• How can I approach this differently to

allow for more ease?

LEARNING IN DISCOMFORT

So let’s say you find yourself in a challenging learning situation, you’ve explored how you can approach things differently to bring more ease to the experience, but sometimes, learning is going to be uncomfortable, no matter what you do. And there’s value in that.

These situations make us stronger, more resilient and resourceful Super Learners.

How do you respond when the pressure is on?

One of my favourite strategies of all time for responding well to challenging situations comes from one of my Master Prac graduates, Maddy. In her day to day experience, a lot of her life has been spent in a security and safety focused way. But she also loves travel and adventure and the reality TV show Survivor. She believes that one day she will audition for that show and she will win. Any time she finds herself in a challenging situation, she imagines she’s on Survivor and tells herself that this is preparation, this is the rehearsal for a challenge on Survivor and she wont quit then, so she wont quit now. Every challenging experience is preparing her to become Australia’s next Survivor winner.

Here are some more common strategies my students come up with:

Break the challenge down into bite size, manageable chunks

Focus on one step at a time

Get out of your head

Use your sense of humour

Remember you’re just a monkey on a rock hurtling through space Think of someone you know who would handle this like a boss and embody them (take on their identity, posture, physiology, breathing, thinking etc be as if you are them)
